keitos

The recipes you actually cook.

Paste a link, photograph a cookbook page, or describe from memory what you made. keitos writes it down as one clean recipe: ingredients on one side, method on the other, the life story left in the sieve. Then it cooks with you, one step at a time.

Keitos is what comes out of the pot. According to Urbaani Sanakirja it is also kiitos, thanks, said by someone who would rather not sound Finnish. We sound Finnish anyway.

The door is still ajar: you get in by invitation. Registration opens soon, 1 € and you are in.

Three ways in.

All three land in the same format, so the collection stays browsable whatever a recipe came from.

Paste a link

Any recipe site, however hostile. keitos fetches the page, and if the page refuses, it reads the same page from the Wayback Machine or opens it in a real browser. The source stays linked.

If the link holds ten recipes, keitos shows them and you pick.

Photograph a page

A cookbook spread, a clipping, a card in your grandmother's handwriting. keitos reads what is on the paper and marks it as read, not guessed. The photographs stay next to the recipe so you can check.

Describe from memory

No link and no paper? Type or dictate what you made and keitos writes a proper recipe from it. Anything you did not say is keitos' guess, and it stays marked as one until you confirm it.

The add-a-recipe screen: paste a link, photograph a page, describe what you cooked

From a link to a clean recipe.

No scaffolding, no ads, no three paragraphs about the summer cottage.

Ingredients and method, apart

A page can tell a recipe however it likes. In keitos the ingredients are always a list with amounts and the method is numbered steps, and each step knows which ingredients go into it.

Tags on arrival

Every recipe arrives tagged. The ones the page did not state, keitos guessed, and a guess shows in its own colour. Add, remove, and the collection sorts itself.

The source stays

A recipe imported from a link is in your collection and nowhere else, and the original page is always one tap away.

Cooking mode.

One step at a time, in text you can read from a metre away, and below it just this step's ingredients, ready to tick off as they go into the pot. The screen stays awake with you, and changing the servings scales the amounts before you start.

keitos finds an ingredient even when the step inflects it: "cream" finds the double cream, "onions" finds the onion.

Cooking mode: one step in large text and the step's ingredients to tick off

Argue with the recipe.

The oven ran hot. An hour was twenty minutes too long. Nobody needs that much salt. Say what went wrong, in your own words, typed or spoken, and keitos suggests what it would change, one card per change.

Nothing changes until you press Apply. An applied change is saved to your recipe and stays marked as keitos' word until you say it yourself.

What is in the fridge?

List what you have, typed or dictated. keitos shows what in your collection you can cook now, and what you are an item or two short of. Nothing is saved, so there is no inventory to keep up to date.

If nothing comes close, keitos says so plainly and offers to write a new recipe from the same list.

The fridge view: an ingredient list and two groups, cook now and one or two short

Once it is eaten.

A recipe book that remembers how it went is a different thing from a bookmark folder.
How did it turn out: four lemons out of five and a note

Lemons and a note

Five lemons and a line on what you would change next time. The collection can be sorted best first.

What to drink with it: three suggestions, one without alcohol

What to drink with it

On request keitos suggests drinks, and at least one of them is always alcohol-free. Write down what you actually drank and it replaces the suggestion.

This link holds three recipes: pick the ones to import

A link that is a whole dinner

When one page holds a starter, a main and a dessert, keitos shows them and imports only the ones you pick.

Search, filter, find.

Name, ingredient or tag. Search forgives typos and says where it found the hit.
The recipe book: search, tags with counts, and recipes with their lemons

A book you cook from together.

Family, the cottage, a circle of friends. Start a book, invite the cooks by email, and put your own recipes in. Everyone in the book sees them and cooks from them. Only the cook whose recipe it is can edit it.

A book lends rather than copies: when you fix your recipe, the fix shows for everyone. And it is a closed circle: no strangers, no feed, no comments from people nobody invited.

Honesty

keitos does not pretend to know.

Every field of a recipe remembers where it came from: read off a page or a photograph, said by you, or guessed by keitos. Guesses show in their own colour and stay guesses until you confirm them. On the edit screen you can turn any field into your own word.

Nutrition figures keitos does not invent. The field is either computed or empty, and today it is empty.

What it costs

One euro, and a lemon.

Getting in costs one euro, and a starter lemon comes with it. Every time keitos reads a page, writes a recipe or suggests a change, it squeezes some juice. The button tells you the price before you press it. Importing without the polish costs nothing, ever.

The lemon does not refill itself. When it runs dry, more is bought as a one-off pack, not a subscription; the shop opens when the door does. The glass is always in the header, and the juice page says where every drop went.

Still in the pot Your own public recipe site at yourname.keitos.fi, a picture on every plate, and open registration. When one of these is done, it moves up this page.
